Spotlight on the NY 19th Congressional District

Republican Winner, Nan Hayworth
New York's 19th Congressional District is located in the Hudson Valley portion of the state and includes parts of Dutchess, Orange, Rockland, and Westchester counties, in addition to all of Putnam County. It is the home of West Point. The 19th cannot be considered safe for either political party. Until Democrat John Hall won the seat in 2006, Republican Sue W. Kelly had served as representative for six terms. Hall won re-election easily in 2008. Republican leaders backed physician Nan Hayworth for the nomination and she delivered, earning 69.7% of the vote in the September 14 GOP primary. She proved to be an impressive fundraiser, even outpacing Hall by a 2 to 1 margin in the first quarter of the year. Hayworth’s experience as a doctor and businesswoman, combined with her commitment to fiscal discipline, gave her an adge over Hall and she took back the seat for the GOP, 53% to 47%.

"My mission is to return us to prosperity through economic growth — growth that will create jobs and allow you to earn, save, spend, and invest more in our communities. I will fight for policies that will empower us to revive the greatest free-market economy in the history of the world. Restoring a dynamic, fast-growing economy will allow Americans to rebuild our infrastructure, put Social Security and Medicare on a permanently sound footing, protect our environment and resources, and defend our country against any threats to peace and freedom."
