Spotlight on the NV 3rd Congressional District

Republican Winner, Dr. Joe Heck
The “pinwheel” shaped 3rd Congressional District of Nevada contains the suburbs of Las Vegas, including Henderson, parts of North Las Vegas and Summerlin and much of unincorporated Clark County. The district was created after the 2000 census and was drawn with the goal of balancing registered Republicans and registered Democrats, though it has since gained a modest Democratic advantage in registration. In an about face, the Nevada Third split 50/50 during George W. Bush’s two contests, but gave Barack Obama a wide 12-point advantage. Republican Jon C. Porter represented the 3rd District from 2003-2009. In 2008, Dina Titus, Democrat and State Senate Leader defeated Porter. Joe Heck, Republican, dropped his bid for governor to challenge Titus. On June 8, Dr. Joe Heck secured the Republican nomination for Nevada’s 3rd Congressional District race, garnering 68.8% of the vote. After winning, he made this statement:“I am honored to be selected as the Republican nominee for Nevada’s 3rd Congressional District. I would like to congratulate my primary opponents on a hard-fought, challenging race. Republicans tonight are sending a loud and resounding message to the Washington establishment: we are united, we are focused, and we are motivated to work through November and take back the people’s 3rd Congressional District,” said Heck. In a hard fought campaign, Heck took back the 3rd District by defeating Titus, 48% to 47%.

“I can promise the citizens of Nevada that any of the current plans being discussed in Washington will not only make the healthcare crisis in America worse, but will decrease Nevadans’ access to private insurers by decreasing competition and will eventually lead to a single payer system.” “Nevada needs a strong physician voice in Congress to champion these issues and ensure that you have access to appropriate healthcare and affordable prescription medications, right here in Nevada." "Our system currently works for the majority of Americans. We can make it work for all Americans through simple, common-sense reforms.”
