Spotlight on the MN 6th Congressional District
Republican Winner, Michele Bachmann
Minnesota’s 6th Congressional District includes the northernmost and eastern suburbs of theTwin Cities along with St. Cloud. Most or all of the following counties are included: Benton, Sherburne, Stearns, Wright, Anoka, and Washington. In the past three presidential elections, this suburban district has favored Republican candidates, giving George W. Bush double digit margins in ’00 and ’04 and John McCain an eight point win in ’08. Sophomore congresswoman Michele Bachmann has become one of the most admired women in Republican politics for her courageous and outspoken stances on conservative issues. She is a sought after Tea Party speaker and has spearheaded the creation of a Tea Party Caucus in the U.S. House. Her effectiveness in the halls of Congress and in rallying the party faithful has made her a prime target of Democrats. Bachmann’s Democratic challenger was Tarryl Clark, state Senate assistant majority leader. Although Democrats had high hopes that they could knock off Bachmann, those hopes were happily dashed with Bachmann's 53% to 40% victory over Clark.
