Spotlight on the DE At-Large Congressional District
Primary Date:
Tuesday, September 14, 2010
Delaware’s At-large District, the oldest district in U.S. history, has never changed its shape. It has always encompassed the entire state. Popular moderate Republican Mike Castle held this seat with ease since 1993. He is making a U.S. Senate bid this year for Vice Pres. Joe Biden’s old seat. Despite the Democratic lean of the state, Castle appears likely to be Delaware's next Senator. This is one of the few seats that Democrats have a legitimate shot at seizing from the Republicans. Lt. Gov. John Carney (D) has eyed this seat ever since Castle announced he would vacate it. Carney is the presumptive Democratic nominee. Republican Michelle Rollins, well known in Delaware, brings considerable personal wealth and key fundraising connections to the race. But so does real estate developer Glen Urquhart. Neither of those candidates will be out funded by Carney. If the Democratic Party brand continues to suffer hits , this race will be very competitive and Castle's seat will stay in the GOP column.
