Spotlight on the AZ 1st Congressional District

Republican Winner, Dr. Paul Gosar
Arizona's 1st Congressional District, geographically the tenth largest in the nation, includes much of the state outside the Phoenix and Tucson metropolitan areas. Native Americans comprise over 20% of the population in this rural district and form a reliable Democratic constituency. Conservative or "Pinto" Democrats once charted the course of elections here, but they have become a dying breed and the district is less conservative than it once was. Former county prosecutor Ann Kirkpatrick captured this seat in 2008 when it was left open upon the resignation of disgraced Republican Rick Rienzi (who faced federal corruption charges). In the past three presidential elections, the 1st has voted for the Republican candidate even though Democrats have a slight voter registration edge. Pres. Obama’s lawsuit against Arizona's illegal immigration law placed Kirkpatrick, as well as other Arizona House members, in tenuous positions. Dr. Paul Gosar gained the endorsement of the Tea Party and Sarah Palin and went on to defeat Kirkpatrick 50% to 46%. As a dentist and small business owner, Gosar is well aware of Washington Democrats’ job-killing and burdensome agenda. Determined to stand up for Arizona families, he will offer commonsense solutions to the Democrat's partisan ideologies. Gosar knows that Arizona families want more freedom and less government imposed roadblocks and he is determined to give them that.

ISSUES

  • Financial Reform - GOSAR TO OBAMA AND CONGRESS:  MORE LAWS ARE NOT THE ANSWER - The Democrats are now pushing for “financial reform” on Wall Street, having convinced themselves that the answer to all problems is more laws and more government.  When it comes to Wall Street, the problem is not a lack of laws, but a lack of government competence.  Congress can pass all the laws it wants, but if the agencies charged with enforcing the laws are incompetent more laws won’t help the situation. They will, of course, increase our taxes because more laws mean more bureaucrats, more agencies and more departments.
  • Immigration - Dr. Paul Gosar: "I strongly believe we need to immediately secure our border and oppose amnesty for anyone who blatantly violates our law." The Federal Government has completely failed its constitutional, legal and moral duty to secure our borders.  The people of the State of Arizona have paid the price for Washington, D.C.'s callous disregard for our laws.  The Obama Administration, assisted by the far left, such as Nancy Pelosi and Ann Kirkpatrick, believe that "open borders" should apply to the United States, even though no other country in the world has an open border.  Because of President Obama's recalcitrance and Ann Kirkpatrick's obstructionism, the State of Arizona had to take action, which included the passage of Senate Bill 1070.  One commentator, Byron York, posited: "Has anyone actually read the law? Contrary to the talk, it is a reasonable, limited, carefully-crafted measure designed to help law enforcement deal with a serious problem in Arizona. Its authors anticipated criticism and went to great lengths to make sure it is constitutional and will hold up in court. It is the criticism of the law that is over the top, not the law itself."

  • Taxes - I am often reminded of Alexis de Tocquevilles famous words that, "The American Republic will endure until the day Congress discovers that it can bribe the public with the public's money."  Today we are reminded how true this statement really is.  We must work together to restore common sense, no-nonsense values back to Washington before we loose this Republic all together.  I adamantly oppose this Liberal Congress’ tax and spend ways.  As a small businessman, I understand how harmful they can be.  It should be a fundamental principle of all elected officials that the American people get to keep more of what they earn. Period. This country was built on sound principles of “free enterprise”, “small business” and “community involvement”.  Hard work, opportunities and timely resources are cornerstones to re-igniting American Business.  We must return to an environment which fosters citizens to provide for, invest in, be responsible for and enjoy the fruits of their labor.  Increased taxes, which are now under consideration, discourage self reliance and personal accountability. I will do my best to minimize your tax burden and l will fight to make sure that your tax dollars are used wisely, without prejudice.

  • Energy - Energy independence is a must.   It’s a matter of national security. Not only do we need to be drilling more at home, but we also need to explore all alternative energy options, such as bi-products, geothermal, nuclear, wind and solar energies. Energy independence is within our grasp.  We need to elect leaders who have the courage to utilize all resources in a common sense application.

"I, like millions of Americans, was shocked to learn, through Hillary Clinton Secretary of State no less, that the "Justice Department . . . will be bring suit" against the State of Arizona. The Arizona law at issue mirrors federal law relative to illegal immigration. So on what basis does the Obama Administration, and the far left who supports it, including Rep. Anne Kirkpatrick, consider the Arizona law discriminatory and unconstitutional when it reflects current federal law? ----- Small business is the backbone of our great country. As a small businessman I am tired of the federal government hindering my efforts to succeed and prosper. Our founders set forth a mandate that in America you can accomplish anything as long as you are willing to work for it. Unfortunately today small businesses have to fight government just to make ends meet. This has to end! In Congress I will work to ensure lower taxes and less government intrusion on small business."
