Spotlight on the IN 9th Congressional District

Republican Winner, Todd Young
The Indiana 9th Congressional is located in the south-central and south-eastern regions of the state. As a result of Democrat gerrymandering, it includes most of Bloomington (Indiana University) in its area. Since it borders Kentucky and southwest Ohio, conservative voters are well represented. John McCain kept the district in the Republicans’ presidential column in 2008 with a narrow 2% point margin, but President George W. Bush enjoyed a large margins of victory there. Democrat Baron Hill, incumbent, and Republican Mike Sodrel faced off against each other for this seat in 2002, 2004, 2006 and 2008. Hill won in 2002, 2006 and 2008 and Sodrel won in 2004. All except the 2008 race were decided by thin margins. Todd Young, in his initial run for elective office, defeated Mike Sodrel in the Indiana May 4 primary and proceeded to reclaim this seat for the GOP by a 52% to 42% margin over Hill.

ISSUES

  • Bring down the cost of health insurance through market based reforms; reject calls to implement caps on carbon dioxide; invest in energy, transportation and telecommunications infrastructure; fix job-killing provisions in our Tax Code; exercise of power limited to Constitution authorization; right to keep and bear arms; necessary investments in our military to keep it strong; pro-life and pro-adoption
"We need leaders who do not see the expansion of government as a solution to almost every problem. We need to rethink the endless and diffuse morass of programs. We need to return to constitutionally limited government. As your Member of Congress, I pledge that, before voting on any proposed act, I will ask whether the exercise of power is actually authorized by the Constitution."
